About 'agave boulder'|{local love} boulder outdoor cinema
Driving into Joshua Tree National Park is like discovering a landscape from a science-fiction film. Piles of boulders scaling hundreds of feet high and plants unique to this specific locale create an other-world sensation. Rock climbing, hiking, and gazing in awe at the sights are among the down-to-earth activities available. This is an enjoyable visit even if you only have two hours to spare or you can stay and camp overnight. Our brief drive in and climbing on the rocks was our kids' favorite activity on a trip to Palm Springs. The $15 entrance fee for a private vehicle was a good value. We only drove in once but the fee is good for seven days. The Joshua Tree and Rock Formations Joshua Trees with scrub-brush looking tops grow throughout the park. Round boulders have gradual slopes and many lay horizontally. The piles range from one-story tall to hundreds of feet high. The Johusa Tree is a member of the Agave family according to the park's information. Mormon settlers in the 19th century reportedly gave the name because they believed the tree looks like the biblical Joshua reaching his hands to heaven. My wife found a theory saying giant sloths from 10,000 years ago spread the Joshua Tree seeds in their dung during travels in what is now the Mojave Desert. Researchers say the boulders of all shapes and sizes were created more than 100 million years ago by molten liquid that oozed from the Earth's crust. Our Experience We were staying at the Palm Canyon Resort in Palm Springs, filled up our water bottles, and made the 40-mile drive with our 6-year-old and her two friends for a quick tour of the park. We drove to the visitor center at the west entrance and grabbed a cup of coffee at the Park Rock Café next door which exclusively carries Red Top Coffee. I told a staff member we were only planning on spending a couple of hours and he recommended we stop at Cap Rock and drive to Keys View. The street in the arid environment wound through a residential area and at the gate the park ranger gave us copies of a Junior Ranger program and activity book for the kids. The drive from the west entrance to Caps Rock was several miles along a well-paved asphalt road. We pulled into a parking entrance and the flat granite-surface trail was only a few tenths of a mile, weaving around several formations of boulders. I figured we would walk around quickly and head off to Keys View and was hoping for a slightly longer hike somewhere. We discovered the rocks were easy to clamber on and we spent more than an hour hopping from boulder to boulder and doing some freestyle climbing. The degree of difficulty had just enough challenge to work my legs. The kids were quite safe and yet had their own fun crawling under archways and little caves made from boulders perched on top of each other. The temperature during our mid-June trip was about 95 degrees at 10 o'clock with highs expected to reach 100. After climbing, we sat in the shade of a boulder to drink water and eat fruit. Since the air is dry a little shade with the steady breeze makes for a quite comfortable visit. We then drove another five miles to Keys View and looked at Mt. San Jacinto and the Coachella Valley. The air was clear enough to catch a shimmering view of the Salton Sea to the east and south. On clear days, we were told it's possible to see to the Mexican border. Joshua Tree Tips and Facts Stay hydrated. Keep plenty of water available year round but especially when visiting from the spring to fall months. One 16-ounce bottle of water per person is necessary for just a couple of hours of hiking and boulder hopping. Wear a wide-brim hat and sunglasses to reduce sun exposure and use plenty of sunscreen. The wind is always blowing in Joshua Tree but that doesn't mean it's uncomfortable. There was a steady breeze of 10 miles to 20 miles an hour during our visit. Keep a bandana on hand to protect the face in case of wind gusts. Elevations in the park range from 3,000 feet to 4,400 feet. Plenty of restaurants from small cafes and saloons to the chain restaurants are easily accessible in Joshua Tree and nearby Yucca Valley. Joshua Tree National Monument's west entrance is less than a one-hour drive from Palm Springs. The roads in the park are nicely paved. The national monument is definitely worth seeing and letting your imagination take you into a different world.
