About 'agave boulder'|{local love} boulder outdoor cinema








               Driving               into               Joshua               Tree               National               Park               is               like               discovering               a               landscape               from               a               science-fiction               film.

Piles               of               boulders               scaling               hundreds               of               feet               high               and               plants               unique               to               this               specific               locale               create               an               other-world               sensation.
               Rock               climbing,               hiking,               and               gazing               in               awe               at               the               sights               are               among               the               down-to-earth               activities               available.

This               is               an               enjoyable               visit               even               if               you               only               have               two               hours               to               spare               or               you               can               stay               and               camp               overnight.

Our               brief               drive               in               and               climbing               on               the               rocks               was               our               kids'               favorite               activity               on               a               trip               to               Palm               Springs.

The               $15               entrance               fee               for               a               private               vehicle               was               a               good               value.

We               only               drove               in               once               but               the               fee               is               good               for               seven               days.
               The               Joshua               Tree               and               Rock               Formations
               Joshua               Trees               with               scrub-brush               looking               tops               grow               throughout               the               park.

Round               boulders               have               gradual               slopes               and               many               lay               horizontally.

The               piles               range               from               one-story               tall               to               hundreds               of               feet               high.
               The               Johusa               Tree               is               a               member               of               the               Agave               family               according               to               the               park's               information.

Mormon               settlers               in               the               19th               century               reportedly               gave               the               name               because               they               believed               the               tree               looks               like               the               biblical               Joshua               reaching               his               hands               to               heaven.
               My               wife               found               a               theory               saying               giant               sloths               from               10,000               years               ago               spread               the               Joshua               Tree               seeds               in               their               dung               during               travels               in               what               is               now               the               Mojave               Desert.
               Researchers               say               the               boulders               of               all               shapes               and               sizes               were               created               more               than               100               million               years               ago               by               molten               liquid               that               oozed               from               the               Earth's               crust.
               Our               Experience
               We               were               staying               at               the               Palm               Canyon               Resort               in               Palm               Springs,               filled               up               our               water               bottles,               and               made               the               40-mile               drive               with               our               6-year-old               and               her               two               friends               for               a               quick               tour               of               the               park.
               We               drove               to               the               visitor               center               at               the               west               entrance               and               grabbed               a               cup               of               coffee               at               the               Park               Rock               Café               next               door               which               exclusively               carries               Red               Top               Coffee.

I               told               a               staff               member               we               were               only               planning               on               spending               a               couple               of               hours               and               he               recommended               we               stop               at               Cap               Rock               and               drive               to               Keys               View.
               The               street               in               the               arid               environment               wound               through               a               residential               area               and               at               the               gate               the               park               ranger               gave               us               copies               of               a               Junior               Ranger               program               and               activity               book               for               the               kids.
               The               drive               from               the               west               entrance               to               Caps               Rock               was               several               miles               along               a               well-paved               asphalt               road.

We               pulled               into               a               parking               entrance               and               the               flat               granite-surface               trail               was               only               a               few               tenths               of               a               mile,               weaving               around               several               formations               of               boulders.
               I               figured               we               would               walk               around               quickly               and               head               off               to               Keys               View               and               was               hoping               for               a               slightly               longer               hike               somewhere.
               We               discovered               the               rocks               were               easy               to               clamber               on               and               we               spent               more               than               an               hour               hopping               from               boulder               to               boulder               and               doing               some               freestyle               climbing.

The               degree               of               difficulty               had               just               enough               challenge               to               work               my               legs.

The               kids               were               quite               safe               and               yet               had               their               own               fun               crawling               under               archways               and               little               caves               made               from               boulders               perched               on               top               of               each               other.
               The               temperature               during               our               mid-June               trip               was               about               95               degrees               at               10               o'clock               with               highs               expected               to               reach               100.

After               climbing,               we               sat               in               the               shade               of               a               boulder               to               drink               water               and               eat               fruit.
               Since               the               air               is               dry               a               little               shade               with               the               steady               breeze               makes               for               a               quite               comfortable               visit.
               We               then               drove               another               five               miles               to               Keys               View               and               looked               at               Mt.

San               Jacinto               and               the               Coachella               Valley.

The               air               was               clear               enough               to               catch               a               shimmering               view               of               the               Salton               Sea               to               the               east               and               south.

On               clear               days,               we               were               told               it's               possible               to               see               to               the               Mexican               border.

               Stay               hydrated.

Keep               plenty               of               water               available               year               round               but               especially               when               visiting               from               the               spring               to               fall               months.

One               16-ounce               bottle               of               water               per               person               is               necessary               for               just               a               couple               of               hours               of               hiking               and               boulder               hopping.
               Wear               a               wide-brim               hat               and               sunglasses               to               reduce               sun               exposure               and               use               plenty               of               sunscreen.
               The               wind               is               always               blowing               in               Joshua               Tree               but               that               doesn't               mean               it's               uncomfortable.

There               was               a               steady               breeze               of               10               miles               to               20               miles               an               hour               during               our               visit.

Keep               a               bandana               on               hand               to               protect               the               face               in               case               of               wind               gusts.
               Elevations               in               the               park               range               from               3,000               feet               to               4,400               feet.
               Plenty               of               restaurants               from               small               cafes               and               saloons               to               the               chain               restaurants               are               easily               accessible               in               Joshua               Tree               and               nearby               Yucca               Valley.
               Joshua               Tree               National               Monument's               west               entrance               is               less               than               a               one-hour               drive               from               Palm               Springs.

The               roads               in               the               park               are               nicely               paved.
               The               national               monument               is               definitely               worth               seeing               and               letting               your               imagination               take               you               into               a               different               world.
